Covid19 is the Goliath of our days, where are the Davids?

 By Prof. Dr. Chandrakumar Manickam
The corona virus outbreak, coupled with the devastating cyclone Amphan in West Bengal, the alarming locust attack, and now the Nisarga Cyclone in Bombay has everyone thinking that apocalypse may not be far off.
Not just Google, even social media is buzzing with claims that the locust attack is Biblical
Google trends reveal that since news of the locust attacks broke, people have been looking up Biblical passages on the event to understand what this religious book says about the event.

Bible scholars have sensationally claimed the end of the world could be upon us as they believe the Four Horsemen, who bring about death, war, famine and disease before the return of Jesus Christ in the holy book, have all been released.

The media reports some facts about Corona and a lot of the experts out there are trying to get the facts straight. But we're not getting the whole story. When we have just Facts and not the Truth, then, we're still listening to a conspiracy.

Facts can only paint a picture of what we can see with our natural eyes what's happening in this world today, but the truth says something a lot deeper and a lot more eternal.

There is a conclusion that Satan wants us to make about the corona virus and about this situation. He wants us to look at all the facts and he wants us to wind up at a place of hopelessness and he wants us to be afraid and to panic.

But God says that if that's where the facts lead us, then, that is actually a lie. As we are watching the news every day and reading those articles, it keeps taking us back to this place of hopelessness, fear or anxiety. Someone may feel helpless but no one should be hopeless.

Goliath was a giant of a person and he was fighting against God's chosen people the Israelites.

He was screaming at the Israelites and taunting them every single day and was taunting God. He was trying to establish the fact that he was bigger than any other person that could come out to fight him.

Goliath was a threat to the People and no one could ever imagine overcoming him by their power. But by the trust of one man David, Goliath was defeated.

David was listening to the truth that was in his heart and not to the facts that people were telling him about Goliath. David knew who was on his side. For David it didn’t matter how big this Goliath was.

A fact is a reality that cannot be logically disputed or rejected. No amount of reasoning will change it. Facts are not discovered, facts are not created, facts are simply acknowledged.
A truth on the other hand, is almost the opposite. Truths are those things that are not simply acknowledged, but must be exposed. Truths, as opposed to fact, are much more fluid and malleable than their empirical counterparts.

Every Fact is True but not all Truths are Facts. Example 1+1=2 is a fact (only one result proven truth), but 2=1+1 is true but not a fact(infinite result as 2=1x2, 2=6-4).

The only difference that makes a difference is that facts are apparent and obvious while all propositions that are truth-bearing  or warrant, justification.

Even though they were God's chosen people they couldn't find anyone who would be willing to fight Goliath. Presumably they were listening to the facts and not getting the truth and because of that they believed a lie. The truth was God was for them and wanted to fight their battles for them.

David had experienced God's presence when he was shepherding his sheep singing worship songs to God. He has had a few victories protecting his sheep from a lion and a bear.

It didn't matter how big Goliath was, God was a lot bigger for him. We see a reflection of his courage and trust in Psalms 40 which he wrote later. In verses 1 and 4, he says he waited patiently for the Lord and he inclined and the Lord heard his cry.

He is probably trying to establish the fact that he had received this boldness and strength because he had spent some time waiting on God.
God doesn't want us to just sit and get bombarded with these lies about Corona that it is going to stay and destroy us. David says in Psalms 40:4, “How blessed is the man who has made the Lord his trust…”

So let us put our trust in God not in the facts, and not in the situation. The fact was Goliath was bigger than the Israelites and it was not possible for them to defeat him on their own. Likewise we are not facing the corona virus on our own, we're not facing anxiety on our own, we're not facing fear on our own, and the Spirit of God is with us.

God wants us to be the light that is shining so bright in the darkness at this point of time. People are going to look at the church and look at the Christians right now and they're going to say “wow what do you have that I don't have. I need that and I want that because I am afraid right now, because I am being beaten down by what I'm reading and by what I'm seeing.”

God has given us this amazing opportunity to share the truth of the gospel.

God says in Isaiah 49:23, “…those who hopefully wait for Me will not be put to shame.”

When we are looking at what the media is saying and waiting for some good news from them, it may not happen. Let us not put our hope in the media. But when our hope is in Jesus Christ, in spite of the Lockdown, though we are experiencing a lack of freedom we shall experience a heavenly peace that the world cannot give.

I am not bound by the walls of my house or by anything that man could put on me; I am free in Christ Jesus.

It doesn't matter what the facts say we will not be put to shame when we put our hope in Him who is the Truth.

When you start to walk out of that place of fear and into that place of faith, you are going to see Giants fall before your eyes, you are going to see Goliath topple over and it's not going to be by your hand it is going to be by God's Spirit. He says, “It is not by might nor by power but by My Spirit.”

“If I (God) shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2nd Chronicles 7:13-14)

God cares more for the good of His creation than we do. We can’t get the full impact of these two verses without the context of the overall story, but we can see the basic truth.

God takes responsibility for withholding rain, ordaining plagues, and sending pestilence (sicknesses and pandemics). If His people humble themselves and pray, He promises to heal the land.

Pestilences are meant to turn people to God for God’s glory through human repentance. It takes a worldwide pandemic crises to have us stop, to have us slow down, think and then ask important questions.

We ask, “Why would God permit corona virus” We need to understand that life is not about our mere safety. It is not wrong to keep safe. But we need to realise that there is a higher calling for us to pursue.

Corona virus, and every other sickness, is a warning that we are insufficient and headed toward a place where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The Bible is very straightforward about why God causes pestilence and why God engineers new and evolving viruses on this sinful world.

There is nothing that provokes fear in a person than being confronted with an enemy that seems beyond his natural ability to contend with, fear sets in and causes mental and emotional paralysis.

There is no doubt about the physical danger this pandemic poses to human health but I think the hysteria and fear has amplified the effect of this virus and has caused more damage than would have ordinarily occurred.

Just think about the global economy that has shut down, schools, economic and social centres that have come to grounding halt.

The whole world is on a lock down, international travel has been suspended and in many countries even local travel too, cities are in quarantine, in some cases whole nations are in quarantine!

The human and financial costs to these pandemic will take a good many years to undo and a great percentage of this damage is caused by the fear psychosis.

The bible story of David and Goliath has almost the same scenario in a different way. (1 Samuel 17)

One man Goliath paralyzed the whole army of Israel and for forty days kept them shaky in their boots, unable to move forward or backwards for fear of the giant who screamed out his challenges to Saul, his army and the people of Israel day after day.

We can learn quite a bit about how to defeat an enemy like this pandemic by looking at how David was able to defeat Goliath. Covid19 is the Goliath of our days, it will take Davids to challenge this Goliath and bring it to its knees.

For as long as they had their eyes on Goliath, the image of God in them and through them became smaller and smaller, until all they could see was the potentially unfolding death scenario before them.

This reminds us of another incident in the Bible about the ten spies who came back with an evil report from the land of Canaan who had the same experience as this people.
They too saw giants in the land and the more they looked at the giants the bigger they appeared until the spies felt like grasshoppers before them. It is stunning!

Today, beware of the news media that seems to take a special delight in reporting the most depressing stories about this pandemic and suppressing any positive incidents of light and hope. People are beginning to feel that the world is coming to an end!

There is a reason why the bible says we are to look to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, Jesus is greater than every other name, in Jesus is salvation, healing and deliverance.

I believe that the Corona pandemic has much deeper significance in the larger scheme of things with respect to the last days with reference to the coming of Christ.

In the days of David, the whole nation was captivated by the terror called Goliath, his voice, reputation and appearance struck fear into the hearts of the people. All they could see or hear was Goliath!

The enemy wants us to keep our eyes and attention on the pandemic, on the rising death tolls and the widespread occurrence of the virus, he does this to sap our faith, and fill us with fear.
Most people see this pandemic as a purely natural phenomenon but it isn’t, its effects maybe physical but its origins are certainly not. Jesus called sickness as oppression of the devil.

David was well aware of the spiritual roots of his conflict with Goliath, so he identified his threats as an offence on God and his people. It is important to note that Goliath also cursed David by his gods.

So the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. And the Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!”

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. (1 Sam 17:43-45)

So David and Goliath were proxies for the spiritual beings they bowed before, David for God and Goliath for the devil through his gods. It is obvious that the Corona virus is Satan’s proxy instrument of death and destruction!
Jesus said, “The thief (Satan) does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)

As we are analysing the Corona situation in the light of the story of David and Goliath, we should do what David did. Your faith is the most important line of your defence and the fulcrum for an effective offense against the devil and his agent Corona.

David did not backpedal in fear, he remembered the great and mighty works of the Lord, the victories that God had given him over the lion and the bear; that strengthened and established his faith and confidence in God.

This is what you can do instead of listening to the news of doom and gloom all day long, read uplifting testimonies of faith, and strengthen your faith. Put on the whole armour of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Jesus said, “In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;  they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” (Mark 16:15-18)
We have a better covenant than David had, we have a Covenant with Jesus the son of God, which is our confidence.

Jesus said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.  Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you... ” (Luke 10:18-20)

The covenant does not work just because you have it, Saul and the children of Israel had the same covenant with David, the covenant works because you place a demand on it, and you believe it, say it and act on it continually.
Say it loudly and confidently, “I have power against the Corona, it will not hurt me!”

May the Lord protect you and your family and use you to bring that kind of faith and confidence in the people that only Jesus can save them from this pandemic if they trust Him. Maranatha!
